Abstract

As an important part of the facial endowment, the face plays an important role in impression formation and trait inference in many aspects such as resume screening and interview, and becomes a key source of information for job matching.Based on social perception theory, personality inference theory and career matching theory, the authors construct a conceptual model of the effect of applicants' facial features on career matching through personality inference, integrate subjective evaluation and physical measurement to extract candidates' facial features, and empirically test the hypothesis through a series of pre-experiments and formal experiments. The results corroborate that social perceptions of candidates' facial features directly influence the career matching effect, explore the matching effect between specific facial features (e.g.eyes, nose, facial profile) and occupational categories (lawyer and salesperson), and reveal the mediating role of personality inferences about candidates based on facial features in this process. The findings will provide useful additions and extensions to recruitment theory and talent trait theory, etc., enrich the relevant literature in the fields of labour economics and human resource management research, provide methodological references for face data processing and analysis for researchers in the field, and provide a theoretical basis for the establishment of a correct view of appearance and the realisation of the job-personality matching effect for both recruiters and candidates in practice.
